Statement zu American Football Teams in der Schweiz ohne Zugehörigkeit zu Swiss American Football

Bereits bei der Kommunikation der Helvetic Guards im Sommer 2022 wurde der Schweizer Verband überrascht und es brauchte diverse Anstrengungen von Seiten Verband um die Kommunikation mit der neuen Franchise und der European League of Football (ELF) überhaupt zu starten. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Landesverbänden wurden den Coaches, Spielern und Funktionären keine Steine in den Weg gelegt, wenn man sich für die europäische Liga verpflichten wollte. In der Zwischenzeit haben sich durch strukturelle Umstände der jeweiligen Franchises bereits etliche Schweizer Leistungsträger wieder zurück zu ihrem Schweizer Stammverein begeben und das Abenteuer internationale Franchise-Liga wohl abgeschlossen.

Wildwuchs an Franchise-Projekten

In den vergangenen Wochen und Monaten hörte man nun stetig von neuen Franchise-Projekten und Franchise-Ligen, ohne dass zuvor irgendeine Form des Dialogs mit dem Schweizerischen American Football Verband (SAFV) oder anderen relevanten Gremien gesucht wurde. Die derzeitige Situation ist für die Förderung und Entwicklung unseres Sports in der Schweiz und zum Schutz unserer Spieler, Trainer und Vereine schlicht unverständlich und absolut stossend.

Der SAFV stellt klar: Es kann und darf nicht sein, dass Franchise-Ligen und Organisationen eigenmächtig Strukturen und Formate schaffen, die die nationalen Sportinteressen, die Nachwuchsarbeit und die Integrität unseres Verbands ignorieren sowie untergraben. Ohne transparente Kommunikation und partnerschaftlichen Austausch schaden einzelne Akteure letztlich nicht nur dem Verband, sondern allen engagierten Mitgliedern, Vereinen und insbesondere unseren Athletinnen und Athleten.

Zu wenig breite Spitze

Gemeinsam mit Teams der Nationalliga A und B hat der SAFV in den vergangenen Wochen die Situation besprochen, wobei sich aus diesen Gesprächen eine klare sportliche Einschätzung ergibt:

«Pro NLA-Team in der Schweiz kann maximal die Abgabe von etwa 2 bis höchstens 3 Leistungsträgern an ein Franchise in einer derartigen Liga verantwortet werden. Hochgerechnet auf die gesamte NLA und der oberen Hälfte der NLB entspricht dies einem Total von rund 20 Spielern, welche aus Sicht der Vereine und des Verbands verkraftbar sind, ohne die sportliche Substanz der nationalen Meisterschaft und die Entwicklung der Teams unverhältnismässig zu schwächen.»

Aufruf zur Sorgfalt

Ab sofort empfiehlt der SAFV seinen Mitgliedern sowie sämtlichen Schweizer Athleten nachdrücklich allfällige Angebote internationaler Ligen sorgfältig zu prüfen und zu überlegen, ob sie ein solches wahrnehmen möchten. Der SAFV empfiehlt entsprechend, im Vorfeld Kontakt mit dem Verband und dem eigenen Verein aufzunehmen und die Seriosität, Integrität und Auswirkungen auf ihren Stammverein sorgfältig zu prüfen.

Ziel des Verbandes ist es, die über Jahrzehnte erschaffenen Strukturen und Errungenschaften des SAFV und seinen Mitgliedern sowie daran Teilhabenden zu schützen und ist offen für eine transparente Kommunikation mit sämtlichen Akteuren im schweizer und internationalen American Football.

Der SAFV steht weiterhin für Zusammenarbeit, den Schutz der Vereinsstrukturen und eine nachhaltige Entwicklung von American Football in der Schweiz. Gemeinsam setzen wir uns für einen organisierten, respektvollen und sportlich fairen Wettbewerb im Interesse aller Football-Aktiven ein – national wie international. Teams, die Teil der Schweizer Football-Community sein wollen, müssen aktiv die Zusammenarbeit suchen und durch konkrete, nachvollziehbare Beiträge sichtbar Verantwortung für diese Entwicklung übernehmen.

Statement on American football teams in Switzerland not affiliated with Swiss American Football

The Swiss association was already taken by surprise when Helvetic Guards made its announcement in the summer of 2022, and it took considerable effort on the part of the association to even initiate communication with the new franchise and the European League of Football (ELF). Unlike other national associations, no obstacles were placed in the way of coaches, players, and officials who wanted to sign up for the European league. In the meantime, due to structural circumstances at the respective franchises, a number of Swiss top performers have already returned to their Swiss home clubs, effectively ending their adventure in the international franchise league.

Uncontrolled growth of franchise projects

In recent weeks and months, there have been constant reports of new franchise projects and franchise leagues, without any prior dialogue with the Swiss American Football Association (SAFV) or other relevant bodies. The current situation is simply incomprehensible and absolutely shocking for the promotion and development of our sport in Switzerland and for the protection of our players, coaches, and clubs.
The SAFV makes it clear: it cannot and must not be the case that franchise leagues and organizations arbitrarily create structures and formats that ignore and undermine national sporting interests, youth development, and the integrity of our association. Without transparent communication and cooperative exchange, individual players ultimately harm not only the association, but also all committed members, clubs, and, in particular, our athletes. 

Tip not wide enough

Together with teams from National League A and B, the SAFV has discussed the situation over the past few weeks, and these discussions have resulted in a clear sporting assessment:
"Each NLA team in Switzerland can justify transferring a maximum of two to three key players to a franchise in such a league. Extrapolated to the entire NLA and the upper half of the NLB, this corresponds to a total of around 20 players, which the clubs and the association consider to be manageable without disproportionately weakening the sporting substance of the national championship and the development of the teams."

Call for diligence

With immediate effect, the SAFV strongly recommends that its members and all Swiss athletes carefully examine any offers from international leagues and consider whether they wish to accept them. The SAFV recommends contacting the association and your own club in advance and carefully checking the seriousness, integrity, and impact on your home club.
The association's goal is to protect the structures and achievements of the SAFV and its members and participants that have been created over decades, and it is open to transparent communication with all stakeholders in Swiss and international American football.

The SAFV continues to stand for cooperation, the protection of club structures, and the sustainable development of American football in Switzerland. Together, we are committed to organized, respectful, and fair competition in the interests of all football players – both nationally and internationally. Teams that want to be part of the Swiss football community must actively seek cooperation and take visible responsibility for this development through concrete, comprehensible contributions.
